Questions & Answers
What is your history? How long have you been in business? What sparked you to start your business?
As soon as I graduated from high school, I started working for the Royal Bank of Canada. While working there, I met my husband, Rob. After attending a seminar about financial planning and private investing led by Paul Rockel, I left the bank in 1987 and we took a leap of faith together to build this business. We had very little money and a brand new daughter at the time, so we worked hard to get things off the ground. At night, we worked on the building Rob purchased to meet the required standards for any place of business, and during the day, we went door-to-door to try to educate our community about private investing. Many of them became clients and are still clients with us today. I'm also happy to say we still operate out of the same building, 30+ years later. It has become a second home, and going to work every day with my staff is one of my favourite things.
Why did you choose to open your business in Kincardine? Why have you continued to stay in Kincardine?
We opened Matchett Financial Services in Kincardine because it is a beautiful town and it didn't have a business quite like this one. We love it here and the reason we stay is because of our clients. Over the years, our clients have become solid friends that we look forward to seeing on a routine basis. We also have a great business model in the office where paperwork and other tasks flow nicely from one desk to the next so we can deliver the level of service our clients have come to expect from us. At the risk of compromising the integrity, honesty and service associated with Matchett Financial Services, the idea of moving or expanding just doesn't feel quite right as of yet and we are happy to stay right where we are.
Tell us about a day in your business life.
When I wake up in the morning, I always check to see what the markets are doing. When I arrive at the office, I check my e-mail and have one final look at my clients' investment portfolio and paperwork to make sure I am ready to see them. I typically see three to four clients a day in the office, sometimes five or six. We review the performance within their investment portfolio and look more deeply into the products themselves to see how each of the businesses within that product are doing. We also look at market trends and I update my clients on what the fund managers are doing to help keep their investments on track. I also ask my clients what's new in their life and what they are expecting to have to pay for in the future. Depending on their needs, we may make changes to their portfolio or leave it alone. When I am not in with a client, I am replying to e-mails, returning phone calls and preparing proposals for retirement and estate plans. As soon as I am awake each day, I get moving quickly and I don't really stop until it is bedtime. It is a lot of work, but I love what I do... and you know what they say: "If you do something you love, you'll never work a day in your life!"
Tell us about your best day in business in two sentences.
Every day is my “best day”. My talented staff and I have the honour and satisfaction of taking care of our clients' financial and personal wellbeing, doing anything from preparing for retirement to dealing with more challenging situations.
Anything you would like to add?
With regards to COVID-19, we are open Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM, and we are able to answer phone calls and e-mails. We are still doing meetings, however they are being held over the phone or online.
Also, now is a FANTASTIC time to invest! We want to encourage non-clients to give us a try for their financial needs and we want to extend a very appreciative "thank-you" to all of our existing clients who have stuck by us all of these years. It's an honour for us to work on your financial goals with you and make sure things are on track.
We wish nothing but health and happiness to everyone in this wonderful community and we are doing our best to keep everyone safe and happy. Stay safe, everyone!
